Five Favorite Flowering Shrubs

by Angie Ouellette-Tower for godsgrowinggarden.com photo BlogStuff4_zpsewuuijaa.jpg

Rejoice for it's Springtime! - this post is my 13th "Contributing Angel" post (Thank you  again to my friend Angel for allowing me to contribute to your amazing blog!)

Today I am sharing with you my five favorite flowering shrubs.  Flowering bushes are the easiest type of flower to grow in your garden since there is almost no upkeep.  Also, if you plant the correct varieties you will have something in bloom all season long!  As an example: here in southern Michigan the Forsythia usually blooms in April, the Lilac in May, Spirea end of May & into June, Snowball is middle of June & the Rose of Sharon blooms the end of July and even into August.  So, start planting & ENJOY!

Lilacs are one of the most long-lived flowering shrubs of the spring.  There are also so many different varieties of Lilacs: double lilac, light purple lilac, dark purple lilac, white lilac, French lilac etc. - the list is endless.

If you are not familiar with the lilac bush then you are missing out on the most wonderful scented flowers in God's Growing Garden.

I just love this flowering shrub - it reminds me of my grandparents because they had a beautiful snowball bush.  To me this flower resembles the Hydrangea flower but on a smaller scale.  This is a very easy shrub to grow and maintain.

The Rose of Sharon is a royal and regal looking flower and it really is the easiest flower to grow.  Simply: plant, water and leave.

I have 3 different varieties of the Rose of Sharon as seen in the picture above.  This flower is related to the Hibiscus plant and if you look closely - the middle of each Rose of Sharon flower resembles that of the Hibiscus.

This beautiful shrub will add a touch of class to any yard or landscape.  It has the most detailed & delicate flower bunches almost resembling lace.
The Spirea shrub should be trimmed every year after the flowers dry up and turn yellow.  However,  I do NOT trim my Spirea bush because I love how the flowers cascade down like a waterfall.  The level of maintaining this flowering bush is totally up to your taste.

The Forsythia shrub is always the earliest blooming flower in my garden and it is the most beautiful color yellow that you will ever see.  There have even been a few years when it has even started blooming before the crocuses show their beauty.  This shrub, when not maintained properly, will become wild and quite a nuisance.  The Forsythia bush really should be trimmed every year.

Tea in the Garden

I'm longing for springtime.  My daughter and I love to have tea parties
outside anytime there the weather is warm.  So I decided I would check out
my white tea pieces and have them ready to party!

Springtime Feeling

I am so longing for spring.  I miss the beauty of all the birds singing in the trees
and the sweet smell of flowers as the breeze lightly sings through the air.
Since I can't find that springtime outside yet, I decided to create a little
springtime feeling for myself.

I found this lovely biscuit container and decided it wanted to come home with me.
Baked up some blueberry muffins and brewed a hot cup of coffee in my blue floral
cup and used my imagination to hear the birds sing.

Then my oldest brought me home a bouquet of daisies
(everyone knows how I'm longing for spring).
I thought my beautiful daisies would look great decked out
in an adorable pink mason jar.

My daughter and I decided to have a little tea party in the yard.
We found a piece of daisy fabric for a tablecloth and set the table with
our blue pieces and instant springtime tea party.
Oh, I almost forgot, we had to make some chocolate
dipped cannolis'.  Can't you just taste them, ummmmm.

I found these awesome floral gardening pieces at Target and fell in love with them.
(Now all I need is something to garden)
Happy Spring Wishes to You

Door Wreath

Hello Friends

I've been wanting to create a new spring/summer door wreath lately.
I like to make one every spring but I'm running late this year.
Anyway today I decided to go for it.
So I went outside for some inspiration.
I love all the signs of summer, the green leaves, the budding trees, the smell of the air, everything.
So during my inspirational walk I found this bush of, well basically, weeds.
They were very green and pretty weeds.
So I decided that this is what I would use for my wreath.
I gathered some branches, some of the weed branches, twigs, grass, basic outdoor items.
I bent the branches, tied them together with grass, you know, wilderness style.
I had Jacob helping me pick up twigs and we had a great time.
Now let me unveil my masterpiece and you can tell me what you think.

Before

After

Well as you might have guessed I didn't get as inspired outside as I would have liked.
So my next brilliant idea was to search Pinterest.
I found some awesome spring/summer wreaths that I pinned for inspiration.
I've got more on my Pinterest page if you want to take a look at those too.
Below are some ideas of wreaths that I thought I'd share with you just in case
anyone else out there is having the same creative issues as me currently.

Inspiration by Pinterest.

Yeah, these are a little better than my own creation, but hey I tried. LOL

Till next time, go create something.
